Food and sunsets on the island of Zeus (Crete)
We were fortunate enough to see a tiny glimpse of Crete as well last year. And we were even more fortunate to have accommodation near what I think it's the best taverna on the whole island. I haven't eaten at all of the tavernas there are but trust me when I say this is beyond words. As you probably know or figured it out by now I freaking love food. And absolutely everything we ate here was delicious.
Taverna Eleven is located in Stavromenos which is a small village near Rethymno. We stayed at Radamanthys Apartments and we had to walk 10-15 minutes to this taverna. We also recommend the accommodation but that would be a different blog post. We ate dolmades, souvlaki, sardines, dorada, shrimps, greek salad, mousaka, pasta, fried zucchini and much more. I can't even remember everything we ate here. We discovered this taverna on either the first or the second day we arrived and after that we ate there almost every day.
But the best time for sure is at dinner. The sunsets you'll see here are beyond words. I'm going to need to find the folder with the thousands of pictures we took here. The sunsets are like the cherry on top. This is a family owned business and they do their job extremely well. The owner even showed me how to eat the shrimps since it was the first time I've tried them. How nice of him?
The portions are enormous. And the prices are very good. Some of the lowest we've seen from all of the tavernas we ate at. And at the end of each meal they give you something on the house. Tiny ice cream on stick, small slices of apple, homemade cake. They also make a very good lemon raki which they also sell. I hope they still sell that because it's delicious. Not too strong and not to sweet or sour.
If you ever go to Crete please eat here at least 2 times.
