Where to stay when travelling to Venice

When it comes to accommodation in Venice you have 2 options: you either stay in Venice on the actual island or you can choose to stay in Mestre. Both options have advantages and disadvantages. Usually accommodation in Mestre is cheaper than Venice. You can save between 30 and 70 euros per room for example for a 3-4 nights stay. With breakfast included. What you may consider as a disadvantage is the fact that you will need to take the bus to reach the island. It usually takes around 20 minutes and a return ticket is 3 euros. A ticket in Mestre and Venice allows you to travel for 75 minutes so you will need to get 2 tickets. One to reach Venice and another one to return. If you stay in Mestre. Almost all of the hotels in Mestre will have a bus station nearby. Between 2-7 minutes of walking.

If you want to save time you can choose to stay on the actual island. Keep in mind though that both airports - Treviso and Marco Polo - are near Mestre. So there is no airport on the island. Hotels in Venice will be a little more older in the sense that buildings are old so don't expect something wow. Rooms are usually between 12 and 18 square meters and it's the classic italian style. If you want luxury you'll have to reach more into your pockets. Staying in Venice makes reaching the attractions much easier. If you have accommodation with views to the canals it's even prettier. Though it can be a little bit noisier because of all the transportation going on there. So it's up to you now where you choose to stay based on these information.
